From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-r-gjat ~ b-g-rjat. Cognate with Tibetan བརྒྱད (brgyad, “eight”), Jingpho matsat (“eight”), Sichuan Yi ꉆ (hxit, “eight”), S'gaw Karen ဃိး (ghó, “eight”).
