From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kəw ~ hu (to steal). Cognate with Burmese ခိုး (hkui:, to steal), Sichuan Yi (ku), (kux njie, to steal), Naxi kv (to steal), Jingpho lägu (to steal), Drung keu (to steal), Yakkha खुमा (khuma, to steal) and Chinese (OC *kʰoːs, “to rob”). Related to རྐུན་མ (rkun ma, robber, thief).
