From Proto-Tai *ʔaːnᴮ (“to recite”). Cognate with Thai อ่าน (àan), Northern Thai ᩋ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lü ᦀᦱᧃᧈ (q̇aan1), Shan ဢၢၼ်ႇ (’àan), Ahom 𑜒𑜃𑜫 (’an). Compare Khmer អាន (ʾaan).
