From Sanskrit शोक (śoka, sorrow; grief; distress; affliction; etc), possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer sok (sorrow; affliction) or Middle Khmer soka (grief, affliction; sorrow, mourning; lamentation, regret); compare Modern Khmer សោក (saok), Pali soka (grief; sorrow; mourning). Cognate with Lao ໂສກ (sōk), ໂສກາ (sō kā).
