From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɛːŋᴬ (“insect”) which /-l-/ is dropped, from Proto-Tai *m.leːŋᴬ (“insect”), from Middle Chinese 螟蛉 (MC meŋ leŋ, “caterpillar”).[1] Cognate with Thai แมลง (má-lɛɛng).
