From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɛːŋᴬ (insect) which /-l-/ is dropped, from Proto-Tai *m.leːŋᴬ (insect), from Middle Chinese 螟蛉 (MC meŋ leŋ, “caterpillar”).[1] Cognate with Thai แมลง (má-lɛɛng).
