From Middle Chinese (MC ɕiᴇŋ, “sound”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿᨦ, Lao ສຽງ (sīang), ᦵᦉᧂ (ṡeng), Shan သဵင် (sěng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥒᥴ (seng1), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜂𑜫 (sing). Related to สำเนียง (sǎm-niiang).
