From Middle Khmer bitāna, bītāna, biyatāna, bīyatāna, bidāra, bbhitāna, bhīttāna, phtāna, vitāṇa (protective cloth covering mounted on poles above a sacred person or object: canopy, awning), from Angkorian Old Khmer vitāna (ibid.), from Pali vitāna (canopy; awning) or Sanskrit वितान (vitāna, spreading out; expansion; extension; awning; canopy; etc); compare Modern Khmer ពិតាន (pitaan, ceiling; canopy). Cognate with Lao ເພດານ (phē dān), ພິດານ (phi dān).
