From Proto-Tai *ɟɤːk (rope; cord). Cognate with Lao ເຊືອກ (sư̄ak), ᦵᦋᦲᧅ (tsoek), Tai Dam ꪹꪋꪀ, Shan ၸိူၵ်ႈ (tsōek), Ahom 𑜋𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (chuek), Zhuang cag. Compare Mon ဇုက် and Proto-Vietic *ɟaːk (whence Vietnamese chạc).
