From Pali sāmaṇera (novice); perhaps via Angkorian Old Khmer sāmaṇera (novice monk). Compare Old Khmer sāmanera, samnera, saṃnera, saṃṇera, saṃmnera, saṃnœra, saṃmnœra, srāmanera; Modern Khmer សាមណេរ (saamaʾnee); Sanskrit श्रामणेर (śrāmaṇera).
