Etymology

From สังฆ (sǎng-ká-, clergy) + ราช (râat, king; male chief, head, or leader); ultimately from Pali saṅgharāja (pontiff), from saṅgha (clergy) + rāja (monarch), possibly via Old Khmer saṅgharāja (head of a (Buddhist) congregation). Compare Modern Khmer សង្ឃរាជ (sɑɑngkhɔɔriəc).
