From Proto-Tai *toːᴬ (“stump (of a tree)”), from Old Chinese 株 (OC *to, “stump”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩴᩬ, Lao ຕໍ (tǭ) or ກະຕໍ (ka tǭ), Shan တေႃ (tǒa), Ahom 𑜄𑜦𑜡 (too).
