From Sanskrit ধৃষ্ট (dhṛṣṭa, “bold; impudent”). Cognate with Bengali ডাঁট (ḍãṭô, “hard; unripe; difficult”), Oriya ଧିଟ (dhiṭô, “shameless”), Marathi दाट (dāṭ, “dense; thick”), Hindi ढीठ (ḍhīṭh), Punjabi ਢੱਠ (ḍhaṭh).
