Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥ (“sun”), whence also सूर्य (sūrya) and स्वर् (svar). Cognate with Latin sol, Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios), Old English sol, Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆‎ (huuarə), Persian خور‎ (xor).
