From Proto-Indo-Aryan *síHwati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *síHwati, from Proto-Indo-European *síh₁-we-ti, from *syuh₁- (to sew). Cognate with Lithuanian siū́ti, Latin suō, Ancient Greek ὑμήν (humḗn), Old English siwian (whence English sew).
