From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śapʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉapʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoph₂ós (“hoof”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬟𐬀 (safa, “hoof”), Old English hōf (whence English hoof).
