Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śankʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉankʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóngʰ-os, from *ḱongʰ- (shell). Cognate with Latin congius, Ancient Greek κόγχος (kónkhos). Compare also English conch, an Ancient Greek borrowing.
