From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ruȷ́áti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ruĵáti, from Proto-Indo-European *luǵ-é-ti, from *lewǵ- (to break, shatter). Cognate with Lithuanian lū́žti (to fracture), Latin lūgeō, Old High German liohhan, Ancient Greek λευγαλέος (leugaléos) Old Armenian լուծանեմ (lucanem), Old English lūcan (to pluck out, pull up), and Old English tō-lūcan (to dislocate, destroy; unlock).
