From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mawǰʰ- ~ *mawgʰ- (to err, to be foolish, to deviate). Cognate with Avestan 𐬆𐬴𐬆-𐬨𐬀𐬊𐬖𐬀 (əṣ̌ə-maoγa, teacher of false doctrines), Middle Persian 'hl-mwg'n (heretics).
