From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mawǰʰ- ~ *mawgʰ- (“to err, to be foolish, to deviate”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬆𐬴𐬆-𐬨𐬀𐬊𐬖𐬀 (əṣ̌ə-maoγa, “teacher of false doctrines”), Middle Persian 'hl-mwg'n (“heretics”).
