From Proto-Indo-Aryan *píbati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *píbati, from Proto-Indo-European *píbeti, late variant of *píph₃eti, reduplication of *peh₃- (to drink). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic пити (piti), Ancient Greek πίνω (pínō), Latin bibō.
