From Old Marathi 𑘠𑘨𑘜𑘹 (dharaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀭𑀇 (dharaï), from Sanskrit धरति (dhárati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰárati. Cognate with Konkani धर्चे (dharce), Hindi धरना (dharnā).
