From Old Marathi तुप (tupa), तूप (tūpa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀢𑀼𑀧𑁆𑀧 (tuppa), of non-Indo-Aryan origin. Compare with Gujarati તૂપ (tūp), Kannada ತುಪ್ಪ (tuppa).
