Etymology

From तत् पुरुष (tat púruṣa, that man), a classic example of such a compound where "that" is being used to mean "that person's".

  1. the original or supreme spirit (one of the 5 forms of ईश्वर).
  2. (linguistics, grammar, lexicography) a class of compounds (formed like the word तत्-पुरुष, ‘his servant’) in which the last member is qualified by the first without losing (as the last member of बहु-व्रीहि compounds) its grammatical independence (whether as noun or adj. or p.)
    1. two subdivisions of these compounds are called कर्म-धारय and द्वि-गु (qq.vv.)
