From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀫𑀸𑀉 (jāmāu), from Sanskrit जामातृ (jāmātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵā́mātā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵeme. Compare Punjabi ਜਮਾਈ (jamāē), Gujarati જમાઈ (jamāī), Nepali जुवाँइ (juwā̃i), Assamese জোঁৱাই (zü̃ai), Marathi जावई (jāvaī), Konkani जांवै (zā̃vai). Doublet of दामाद (dāmād).
