Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰángʰaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰángʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰengʰ- (to walk, step).[1] Compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬀 (zaṇga), Middle Persian [script needed] (zang).

The Sanskrit root is जंह् (jaṃh).

      sadyo jaṅghāmāyasīṃ viśpalāyai dhane hite sartave pratyadhattam .
