From Sanskrit चलति (calati) ~ चरति (carati, to go away). Compare Hindi चलना (calnā), Nepali चल्नु (calnu), Punjabi ਚੱਲਣਾ (chalṇā), Gujarati ચરવું (carvũ) ~ ચાલવું (cālvũ), Bengali চলা (côla).
