From Old Marathi खेळणे (kheḷaṇe), क्षेळणे (kṣeḷaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑁂𑀮𑀇 (khelaï), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *khel-. Cognate to Gujarati ખેલવું (khelvũ), Hindi खेलना (khelnā), Nepali खेल्नु (khelnu), Bengali খেলা (khela), Assamese খেলা (khela).
