From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kánati, from *kan- (to dig), with unetymological aspiration of the first consonant. Cognate with Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬥- (kan-, to dig), 𐬎𐬯-𐬐𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬌 (us-kəṇti), Old Persian 𐎣𐎴- (kan-, to dig) whence Persian کندن (kandan, to dig).
