From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kánati, from *kan- (“to dig”), with unetymological aspiration of the first consonant. Cognate with Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬥-‎ (kan-, “to dig”), 𐬎𐬯-𐬐𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬌‎ (us-kəṇti), Old Persian 𐎣𐎴- (kan-, “to dig”) whence Persian ‎ (kandan, “to dig”).
