खच्चर

Hindi

Etymology

Likely borrowed from Punjabi ਖੱਚਰ (khachr, mule), from Late Proto-Indo-Aryan *khaccara-, borrowed from Proto-Iranian *xara-tara- (mule), from *xárah (horse), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰáras (donkey). Compare Sanskrit खर (khára, donkey).

The double (ca) supports Punjabi borrowing, since a direct descendant from Proto-Indo-Aryan would have the form *खाचर (*khācar).
