खच्चर
Hindi
Etymology
Likely borrowed from Punjabi ਖੱਚਰ (khachr, “mule”), from Late Proto-Indo-Aryan *khaccara-, borrowed from Proto-Iranian *xara-tara- (“mule”), from *xárah (“horse”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰáras (“donkey”). Compare Sanskrit खर (khára, “donkey”).
The double च (ca) supports Punjabi borrowing, since a direct descendant from Proto-Indo-Aryan would have the form *खाचर (*khācar).
