From Proto-Indo-Aryan *káyśas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káyĉas. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬎 (gaēsu, curls), Middle Persian gys (gēs, curl, locks) (whence Persian گیس (gis), گیسو (gisu, ringlet of hair, forelock, sidelock, curl)), Kurdish kezî (kazī), Ossetian гъес (ǧes), хъис (qis, bristle). Akin to Old Armenian գէս (gēs), an Iranian borrowing.
