From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kawp-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kawp-, from Proto-Indo-European *kwep- (“to boil, smoke, move violently”). Cognate with Latin cupio (“I desire”), vapor (“steam”), Lithuanian kūpėti, Old English hopa (whence English hope).
