Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hŕ̥śyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hŕ̥ĉyas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ĺ̥-ḱ-yos, from *h₁el- (deer, horned wild animal). Cognate with Russian лось (losʹ, elk), Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, red deer), Old English eolh (whence English elk).

Usage notes

Although the form ऋष्य (ṛṣya) is more popular due to its use in Classical Sanskrit literature, Monier-Williams states that the word was originally ऋश्य (ṛ́śya). The original form is also attested in the Rig Veda.
