From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HásHr̥k, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HásHr̥, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésh₂r̥ (blood). Cognate with Hittite 𒂊𒌍𒄯 (ēšḫar), Ancient Greek ἔαρ (éar), Old Armenian արիւն (ariwn) and perhaps Latin sanguis.
