From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hankás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánkas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ónkos, from *h₂enk- (curve, bend). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄγκος (ónkos), Latin uncus, Old East Slavic паукъ (paukŭ).
