From Middle Persian 𐭱𐭪𐭥 (šakar), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā, ground or candied sugar, originally grit or gravel), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂ (gravel, boulder). Compare Arabic سُكَّر (sukkar).
