From Middle Persian ʾmbl (ambar, “ambergris”); compare Arabic عَنْبَر‎ (ʿanbar), from which the alternative Syriac forms ܥܡܒܪ‎ (ʿambar) and ܥܢܒܪ‎ (ʿanbar) are derived.
