From Middle Persian [script needed] (pursīdan), from Old Persian [script needed] (fraθ-), from Proto-Indo-European *preḱ- (to ask). Proto-Indo-European cognates include Kurdish pirsîn, Sanskrit पृच्छति (pṛccháti), Armenian հարց (harcʿ), Latin posco and Old English frignan.
