Etymology

From Middle Persian MKḆLWNtn' (padīriftan), MKḆLWN (padīr-), from a Proto-Iranian compound of *pati- and *grab- (to grab), from Proto-Indo-European *ghrebh-/*gherebh-, whence also Sanskrit गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti, he seizes), गृभ्णाति (gṛbhṇāti), and Proto-Germanic *grab (English grab), Proto-Slavic: *grabiti.
