From Middle Persian [script needed] (mānpat, “headpriest, theologian”), from Avestan 𐬥𐬨𐬁𐬥𐬊𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌‎ (nmānopaiti, “priest teacher”) and/or Old Persian [script needed] (magushpati) with the same meaning.
