Etymology

From the root م ل ح (m-l-ḥ); compare مَلُحَ (maluḥa, to be salty, to be handsome), مِلْح (milḥ, salt, beauty). Since salt has been costly and made dishes notably “tasty”, the sense of “beautiful” developed.
