Etymology
From Arabic مَا هِيَ شَيْء (mā hiya šayʾ, “she/it is nothing”) and مَا هُوَ شَيْء (mā huwa šayʾ, “he/it is nothing”), respectively. The gender distinction was eventually lost, leaving miš, muš as interchangeable or regional variants.
