From Arabic مَا هِيَ شَيْء (mā hiya šayʾ, she/it is nothing) and مَا هُوَ شَيْء (mā huwa šayʾ, he/it is nothing), respectively. The gender distinction was eventually lost, leaving miš, muš as interchangeable or regional variants.
