Etymology
Variant of Persian قفس (qafas, “cage”) through a sound shift from /f/ to /v/ then to /w/ when re-borrowed; from Arabic قَفَص (qafaṣ), from Aramaic קוּפְסָא (qūp̄ṣā), ultimately from Ancient Greek κάψος (kápsos) or Latin capsus.
