عليها السلام

Arabic

Etymology

Female form of عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلامُ (ʿalayhi s-salāmu, peace be upon him), which is used after mentioning Islamic prophets other than Muhammad (and by Shiites also for the twelve imams).

Phrase

عَلَيْهَا ٱلسَّلامُ (ʿalayhā s-salāmu)

  1. (Islam) peace be upon her; a eulogy used after mentioning certain venerated women (see below)

Usage notes

  • Sunnis typically use the phrase after mentioning the Virgin Mary or Asiya, wife of the Pharaoh that persecuted the Israelites. Shiites also use it after mentioning certain descendants of Muhammad, most notably his daughter Fatima.
