From Avestan 𐬯𐬥𐬁 (snā), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₂- (to flow, swim).[1] Compare Ancient Greek νῆσος (nêsos, island), whence English Polynesia and Indonesia, and Latin natare (to swim) (Spanish nadar and Italian nuotare).
