Etymology
Uncertain etymology; perhaps from زَمْهَر (zamhar, “bloodshot eyes, angry eyes”), perhaps in reference to color; bolstered by خَزِرَ (ḵazira, “to squint, to contract one's eyes”) and شَزْرِ (šazri, “to give a shifty look, to glance with hatred in one's eyes”) used in its synonyms. The ending possibly suggests the Iranian adjective suffix *-ak, *-āk; compare the synonyms شَزْرِيق (šazrīq) and خَزْرِيق (ḵazrīq). Alternatively, the ending is related to زَرَق (zaraq, “blindness; the color blue”) or Aramaic זרג (zāreḡ, “eyes shining, glistening; pale red wine or amethyst color”).
