From Middle Persian zyšt' (zišt, “hateful, ugly”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰáyždas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéysd-os, from *ǵʰeysd- (“anger, agitation”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬀 (zaēša), German Geist, Old English gāst (whence English ghost).
