From Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭‎ (zargōn) (Persian ‎ (zargun)), from Ancient Greek Συρικόν (Surikón, “red lead”, literally “Syrian”) (also found as Latin Syricum), syn. σάνδυξ (sándux). إِسْرِنْج‎ (ʾisrinj) is the same word.
