خواستن

Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian hwʾstn' (xwāstan). Compare Old Armenian *խազ- (*xaz-), an Iranian borrowing.

Pronunciation

Verb

Dari Persian خواستن
Iranian Persian خواستن
Tajiki Persian хостан (xostan)

خواستن (xâstan) (present stem خواه (xâh))

  1. (auxiliary) to want (to do something)
  2. to want
  3. to intend

Usage notes

  • (auxiliary, to want): When خواستن is used as an auxiliary verb, the main verb is conjugated in the subjunctive/conditional. That is, both verbs are conjugated for person, so the resulting sentence has a verb clause that does not exist in the natural English translation. A literal reading of می‌خواهم بروم (mi-xâham beravam) / می‌خوام برم (mi-xâm beram, I want to go) is therefore, “I want [that] I go.”
