حامل

See also: جامل

Arabic

Etymology

Derived from the active participle of حَمَلَ (ḥamala, to carry).

Adjective

حَامِل (ḥāmil) (feminine plural حَوَامِلُ (ḥawāmilu))

  1. pregnant

Usage notes

  • Due to its semantic constraints, حَامِل (ḥāmil, pregnant) is virtually always encountered in the feminine. As with some other gender-specific words, like حائِض (ḥāʾiḍ, menstruating), the feminine ending is usually omitted. (The form حامِلة (ḥāmila) is a rarer variant, whence Persian حامله (hâmele) and its descendants.)
  • When used as a participle of حَمَلَ (ḥamala), حَامِل (ḥāmil, carrying) behaves like a normal participle.
