From a Northern Iranian dialect, probably Mazanderani جفری (jaferi). Cognate with Transoxianan Persian obsolete ژافه (žāfa, “a kind of herb, saffron?”), Sanskrit जवा (javā, “saffron, rose”). Related to زعفران.
