From Proto-Dardic *ī́ṭṣa, from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hŕ̥ṭṣas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hŕ̥ĉšas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ŕ̥tḱos (“bear”). Cognate with Sanskrit ऋक्ष (ṛkṣa), Kalasha ič̣, Palula iṇc̣, Hindi रीछ (rīch), Gujarati રીંછ (rī̃ch), Garhwali रिख (rikh), Persian خرس (xers), French ours.
